GUEST BLOG: INTERVIEW WITH KRISTIA KNOWLES PHOTOGRAPHY
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PHOTOGRAPHER AND WHY DO YOU LOVE IT?
9 years. Boy time flies when you are having fun! I particularly love headshots because the pressure is on. You have only an 8x10 to make an impression on your viewer. I have always been mesmerized by faces. I study what draws me to a particular headshot or image, and how it makes me feel. I do love fashion photography. I have a passion for editorial work. I love clothing! Next life, I am going to be a designer!
WHAT IS THE VALUE OF A GREAT HEADSHOT?
In my opinion, what makes a great headshot is the authenticity of the photo. Lighting, background, clothing and framing are all integral working parts of the final image. Eyes should always be the focus of the photo. There should be something meaningful in the eyes. My favorite is a “twinkle” that leaves me guessing.
WHAT ARE THE DOs AND DON’Ts?
Be authentic. Play to your strengths. If you are a one trick pony, use the one trick over and over. Don’t worry about what you are not. Don’t “play” the emotions. Be in the moment. Get out of your head. Most of us have insecurities. Don’t let them overwhelm you during a shoot and take over. You’re an actor. Use them, or compartmentalize them.
HOW SHOULD ACTORS PREPARE FOR THEIR SHOOT?
Think about what roles you already play. Think about what roles you would like to play that you haven’t. Bring clothing that support those characters. Also, make sure they are cleaned and pressed! Stretch yourself and take the leap while in your headshot session and try emotions out!
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ACTORS LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER?
Find one that is invested in you. Spend time and talk with him/her about your ideas and goals. Make sure you like them!!!! It’s a relationship!!!!!
HOW LONG HAVE YOU KNOWN NATALIA AT NL ACTING STUDIO?
OH my gosh! I met her soon after I had the honor of photographing her incredible mum, Suzanna Leigh. I have a special place in my heart for them both.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE AND WHY?
LUKE: 12:34 “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” What we treasure has massive implications on our heart and soul, in this life. It’s a simple verse that can take on so many meanings. What do you value and treasure most? God, money, fame…the list goes on.
