WHO'S IN YOUR CORNER?
Actors are some of the most hopeful creatures on Earth. They have this innate ability to dream and achieve great things. One of the biggest challenges many actors face is a lack of a strong support system to get them through the unbearable slow times and countless rejections they face. People view their choice of career as an unrealistic child fantasy and something that is unattainable and unable to pay the bills and support a life for themselves or their families.
As an acting coach of Method acting for over ten years, I can testify to how important a strong support system is and how untrue these views on their career choice are. Actors are artists to need to create like any other artist. That urge runs deep within them. They’ve chosen to go after their dream in one of the most competitive and brutal industries out there. Everything is achievable. But like any other situation in life, doubt and fear will crumble that dream leaving them unable to create and feeling something is always missing.
Actors inspire me. They are some of the bravest, clever, most resourceful, resilient, ambitious, hardworking, disciplined and compassionate people. They create beautiful stories to tell the world which allows us to escape for a moment and live within their imagination, while sparking the fire back into our own.
Actors, I thank you. I thank you for your hard work, your creativity and the bravery in going after your dream. Find your support system and cherish it. Surround yourself with those who lift you up, inspire your creativity and urge you to keep pressing forward despite daily rejections and lack of belief from others.
For those reading this who may not be an actor, but know one, reach out to them and tell them to keep going. Go support them at their next play or viewing party. Ask them why they got into this and what they love most about their art.
Olivia Coleman's Oscar win for Best Actress and her journey of how she got to where she is today, is inspiration enough. Fun fact: She is trained in Method acting.
Always remember, by lifting others up, we lift ourselves up.
I wish you all a beautiful week.
